Om Shanti 💫

After the market I attended yesterday, and brainstorming with my friend I quickly took action on the inspo to upcycle a hat! Now- I understand some branding for the design is all it needs, but in this case I saw so much more potential with the patch removed. It was sewn in so razoring the stitching to remove it was easy. Then I went with a poinsettia/hibiscus flower shape. Hand stitched that on with a whipstitch, then beaded the letters on. "Om Shanti" is a great mantra for world peace and unity, bringing those vibrations from us when said, give it a go! I think it's so fun that from the front of the hat you can also read the letters and well as the top- a very fun touch. It's fun working with beading on some of the pieces created, it helps me understand how best to alter beaded things and approach them. What a fun hat, would do again!

Divine Dream

While thrifting I came upon this blanket. Just look at that pattern 😻 and as much as I love it as a blanket, I thought it'd be even better as pants. I used the whole width of the blanket so on the front panels and the hem of the pants I have the finished edge of the blanket- and let me tell you, I love my serger <3 I finished every edge and played around with side pockets for this project. Their billowy leg adds a good silhouette, movement and comfort for a good lounge pant. Blanket pants are some of my go too- they're so fun and realistically how many people are buying small blankets, it's a great way to upcycle  and especially if they have rips or stains that would deem them unworthy of buying! The new thing I learned and tried with this pant is, on the sides where I wanted to keep the original edge of the blanket I topstitched it over the edge of the back panel- and this time I serged the back panels side so that it would hold the edges together and create a more finished and intentional look on the inside. I'm pleased with the outcome and it should add to the pants longevity. I'm excited to see who their new home will be! Happiness to you *

Quilted Exploration

This pieces base, as you may guess from the blog title, is from a quilt! One of the best parts of projects like this is I knew I wanted to make pants but never would have envisioned this! I wasn't sure how it was going to look until I finished it. It was a fun journey of trying new things, attention to details and my first time utilizing hardware in clothes! When creating a high point of tension, like the straps connected to the belt hardware, ALWAYS stitch over at least 2 times to ensure a strong hold. I wouldn't do a super small stitch width as that may increase the risk of tearing the fabric. Happy Creating! 🧵🪡

MadDawg with a Blawg

Shoes. I've colored on shoes, I've added fabric to shoes... never have I ever actually fixed shoes! Let me correct that; now I've fixed a shoe! I had bought these leather shoes- leather inside, leather soled and leather figure- for a veryyy reasonable price for the materials. Little did I know the buckle on the one shoe I didn't try on (now I know to try on both, or at least buckle both) was broken! no way to utilize the sizing adjustments for the strap and no place to slide the end of the strap into. There was the debate of do I just return them? But then what, they just get thrown away? Most likely. I'd rather fix them because they're so cute, and why not take care of the investment! Now they're personalized without needing to even be broken in yet. How cool. Anyway- next was the fun part. I figured I would open the leather that had the elastic loop sewn in to remove that and sew it back on. Well, there was so much glue and other things attached it would have really risked the functionality of the strap. Time to reevaluate. How do I get this loop opened and closed around this new buckle- which fortunately I already had a buckle from who knows what that worked great! What if I just cut the elastic on the inside and sew it really well back together? There's not a lot of tension on the actual strap- I think that should work! I return to the leather I opened, to sew that part closed and moved on to putting the buckle on and stitching the elastic really well. I melted the edge of the elastic in hopes of that keeping it from unraveling then I hand stitched, honestly without method- all over. Hoping to catch many different fibers in many different ways to basically weave them together so that they'll hold fast. I want something to hold the end of the strap- I don't have any metal loops that would work on the shoe without being heavy or too bulky to do the job. Alas, my jewelry material horde comes in handy.... wire. Malleable, light and can be made to be perfect size. I wrapped the wire through the elastic loop twice and decided the width and how much to leave for wrapping. I then used the ends of the wire to twist around the looped wire to make it more durable, plus making it cute! the wrapped wire and the way it settles on the shoe is my favorite detail. They have been my favorite shoes this week and I love the challenge that were presented and following my desire through and realizing that I can! Now the shoes are as good as new, even better ;) and saved from being discarded! The money spent could have been exchanged back but following it through regardless reaped so much more for me. Do you have a shoe that could use some revamping or bedazzling? Try adding beads, or maybe coloring on them- switching out the laces for ribbon, or maybe yours too are missing a buckle or a grommet; how will you revive them?

Welcome to my spew of thoughts muah ha haaa! I have been wanting to be active on my website and stray further from social media- though this is a form of it I prefer the thoughtfullness and intentionality of a website, and being the consumer searching and selecting with purpose and curiosity.
